At play

Join First Baptist Church this year to develop a more healthy body, mind, and soul in the . . .

Year of Health

As we begin this year of health, our official kick off is Wednesday night, February 6. During our time for Bible study we will be able to visit several interest centers that will provide information a-bout activities, events, programs, and opportunities for the entire church family. From family outings, to blood pressure checks, to cholesterol screening, to 5K walks and runs, to bike trips down the Creeper Trail, to canoe trips, to nutrition education, to weight loss programs, to yoga and aerobics classes, to measuring our exercise, to walk across the state of North Carolina...these are some of the opportunities being offered. There is some activity for all ages.

I shared Sunday morning that the Quest Wellness Center will  be offering corporate rates to our members and will wave the membership joining fee for those who sign up in February. If you are already a member, you may receive a lower rate by being a member of our church. We have been contacted by the Lenoir Aquatics and Fitness Center that they too will offer a corporate rate for our members to participate in their programs. We hope that both fitness centers will be present to share more information on February 6.                      DBS

 WALK ON!

Terri Clapsaddle, RD, LDN, CDE

A new study out of UNC Chapel Hill  shows that frequent walking alone can help lower heart disease (cardiovascular) risk factors.  According to the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA), which has studied 4,700 walkers since 1986, a moderate but significant association was seen between walking  and cardiac risk factor reduction.  These participants in the CARDIA study who walked for 4 hours or more per week had higher HDL (good) cholesterol levels, lower triglyceride levels (another circulating fat in the blood) and lower fasting insulin levels (a predictor of diabetes risk).  The bottom line:  walking is not only easy for most and affordable for all, it has great health benefits.  Have you had your walk today?

FBC recommends checking with your doctor before beginning any exercise program.  This information is brought to you as part of the Year of Health for First Baptist Church.  More information is to come on exercise and activity programs offered at FBC in February.
